This site has been created and maintained since 1996 to foster communications between Argentina and the Falkland Islands. In order to do so, here you have the criteria for respectful interaction.
The general attitude is: if Argentine people want to make friends and get to know better the people of the Falkland Islands, they would indeed follow several parameters:
1) To call Islanders by their chosen name, Falkland Islanders, or Islanders, and not Malvineros;
2) To use their language, English and not Spanish;
3) To respect when and how people from the Islands choose to communicate.
This site will not provide emails from Falklands individuals for any reason, and will not foster any interaction if, when initiated from Argentina, has no response from the Islands. If and when they want to interact, it is entirely voluntary and up to them. In the same vein, this site cannot and will not be used to propagate to the Islands unilateral initiatives or peace proposals. We will entertain gladly initiatives that are reciprocally respectful, originated in either side, and later shared, under the criteria that future working peace proposals are only produced from the bottom up, with the participation of all involved stakeholders.
SOME PRINCIPLES OF CONFLICT RESOLUTION
Conflict can be constructive. It offers the opportunity for innovation in relationships and material conditions.
Every person acts in accordance with what he or she perceives as reality, including its emotional, physical and other perceptions. We pursue what we perceive as pleasure and try to avoid what we see as pain.
People are better able to work with their emotions when they are aware of them. Denial doesn't help.
Establishing "facts" of past events is attempted in conflict resolution only to the degree that these affect the negotiation process and any resulting agreement. There is no seeking of "ultimate truth" or punishment in conflict resolution.
The people in a particular conflict who will have to live with the outcome of that conflict, are the best creators and evaluators of any specific agreement.
People who feel responsible for an agreement are likely to be committed to making that agreement work.
Although there are some real conflicts over limited resources, in the long run, if not the short run, it is in everybody's interest that no party perceives itself as "the loser."
There may not be a fully satisfactory solution for all people in every conflict, but conflict resolution requires that people in a conflict search honestly for such a solution.
